Car Battery Safety

There are a number of safety issues surrounding car batteries which should be highlighted:

 

Sulfuric Acid

Lead acid Car batteries contain electrolyte which is a mixture of sulfuric acid and water. This mixture can cause serious burns if not washed off the skin shortly after contact. Always handle with care and wear protective equipment. Never get electrolyte near the eyes and if spilled onto clothing remove and wash thoroughly.

 

Explosive Gases

During charging a lead acid car battery gives off a highly flammable mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gas. Always take care and charge batteries in a well ventilated area. Car batteries have been known to explode during and after charging.

 

Short Circuit

Take care when inspecting or maintaining a battery located in your vehicle. Using metal tools around the battery area can inadvertently lead to a short circuit of your vehicles electrical system. Keep all tools, jewellery and other metal objects well away from exposed battery terminals.

 

Leaving Batteries Outside

Never leave a car battery in direct sunlight. There is a chance that batteries left in direct sunlight could explosion. Always store batteries away from direct sunlight and in an area unlikely to have metal object come in contact with the battery.
